Hello and welcome to my weekly blog. This week I wanted to change things up and not only discuss my journey with PNES, but also talk about a topic I feel like a lot of us struggle to understand or identify with. The topic for this week that I am talking about is individuality or being authentic to who you are meant to be. This topic is important to me for several reasons, but mostly because I have struggled for years to figure out who I am and where my place in society is. Until recently I didn’t really understand my unique, one of a kind identity or that we’re all built differently and should express our individualism.
To get us started on the topic of individuality or being “one of a kind”, I want to begin with “what defines someone’s individualism?”. Is there really one singular definition to explain what individuality looks like or is it based on a multitude of factors. I believe that everyone is unique and has/should have their own sense of identity. It is also my own opinion that there is no perfect definition to explain what individuality is, because it’s based on each individual person, not a group of people.
In terms of individualism and how it relates to my journey with PNES or anyone’s difficult journey dealing with a medical condition, people may go through similar experiences or be diagnosed with the same condition, but that doesn’t mean they’re going to have the same experience. We are all unique and have our own individual sense of self-identity, no one can or should be able to take that away from you. One of my favorite phrases is “Don’t let anyone steal your thunder” and I love this because it’s message is trying to tell us to let your voice be heard, by being as loud as possible and don’t ever let anyone take that away from you.
Individuality isn’t about staying quiet and hiding in the shadows, it’s about letting the world know who you are and what you stand for. Don’t ever be afraid to show your true colors, even when you’ve had enough and just want to forget everything. I can tell you from personal experience, that by pushing forward and never giving up, it is worth it at the end of the long, dark tunnel. Just keep going and never give up and you too will make it past this “bump in the road”.
